چکیده

purpose : the evaluation of the presence of herpes simplex virus (hsv) in corneal scars by real-time polymerase chain reaction (pcr) and comparison of the results with histopathologic findings and clinical diagnoses methods : eighty-seven corneal scar samples obtained after penetrating keratoplasty (pk), were selected after reviewing the records from 2006 to 2010. nucleic acid was extracted from paraffin embedded corneal samples and pcr-amplified for hsv dna. results : among 87 samples, four samples were excluded because internal controls were negative. hsv infection was established in 9.6% (8/83) of all patients. the prevalence of hsv infection in patients with no clinical suspicion of herpetic keratitis was 7.3%. histopathologic evaluation revealed that among samples with positive pcr results, 100% had evidence of inflammation, 62.5% had giant cells, 37% had necrosis, 62.5% had vascularization, 62.5 % had ulcer and all of them had inclusion bodies. conclusion : because some of the patients with no clinical suspicion of herpes infection were found positive, we suggest that hsv keratitis to be considered as one of the underlying etiologies in any patient with corneal scar. therefore, performing further diagnostic methods, including pcr and histopathology, are mandatory to rule out the infection.    iranian journal of ophthalmology 201325(3):222-226 © 2013 by the iranian society of ophthalmology

The relationship of graft survival and herpes simplex virus latency in recipient corneal buttons

PURPOSE To demonstrate relationship between herpes simplex virus (HSV) corneal latency and graft survival. METHODS Prospective case control study. 28 recipient corneal buttons and donor cornea-scleral remnants were examined for HSV DNA with polymerase chain reaction (PCR). None of the recipient had a history of HSV infection. Serum samples of graft recipients were analyzed for the presence of...

Detection of herpes simplex virus type 1, 2 and varicella zoster virus DNA in recipient corneal buttons.

AIM To study the value of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis, to detect viral DNA in recipient corneal buttons taken at the time of penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) in patients with an initial diagnosis of herpetic stromal keratitis (HSK). Since HSK has a tendency to recur, an accurate diagnosis of previous HSK could be the reason to start antiviral treatment immediately, thereby possibly d...

Detection of Herpes Simplex Virus Infection in Cerebrospinal Fluid

ABSTRACT        Background and Objective: Herpes simplex encephalitis is a life-threatening consequence of the central nervous system (CNS) infection with Herpes simplex virus (HSV). Although it is a rare disease, mortality rates reach 70% in the absence of therapy and only a minority of individuals can return to normal function. The aim of this study was to d...

Detection of Herpes Simplex Virus DNA in Pseudoexfoliation Syndrome

Background: Pseudoexfoliation syndrome is one of the most common identifiable causes of open angle glaucoma. It has unknown etiology and pathogenesis. Infection, possibly viral, is one of the proposed pathogenic mechanisms in this condition. In the present study the presence of herpes simplex virus (HSV) in specimens of anterior lens capsule of patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome has been ...

Nonneutralizing antibody against the glycoprotein K of herpes simplex virus type-1 exacerbates herpes simplex virus type-1-induced corneal scarring in various virus-mouse strain combinations.

PURPOSE To determine whether the exacerbation of herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) induced corneal scarring that the authors reported previously in HSV-1 glycoprotein K (gK) vaccinated BALB/c mice challenged with HSV-1 strain McKrae was a general phenomenon independent of virus and mouse strains. To determine the gK-induced immune response leading to exacerbation of HSV-1-induced corneal scar...

Corneal Langerhans cell dynamics after herpes simplex virus reactivation.

PURPOSE The authors investigated the progressive changes in the distribution of corneal Langerhans cells (LC) after reactivation of latent herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) in mice. METHODS After corneal inoculation of National Institutes of Health inbred mice with HSV-1 and the establishment of latency, viral reactivation was induced by irradiating the ocular surface with 250 mJ/cm2 of ult...
